In addition to shelter, the forests provided food. After fires set by lightning bolts swept away the underbrush, fresh grasses sprang up and provided a change of diet from the grasses that grew in open areas. Now, 99% of Abaco's forest fires are set by humans.

The nourishing grasses probably had arrived as seeds in the crops of migrating birds.
