Season’s Greetings from all the Critters at the Abaco Wild Horse Preserve.

And for the New Year,

The horses wish that your grain buckets will always be full

Nunki knows where we keep the grain.

The dogs wish that you will always have plenty of excellent bones

Sharing the plenty

The cats wish that you may always find a patch of warm sun and a friend to share it.

Ho Tai and Kali, best friends

And Mim wishes you peace and plenty and as much R & R as you can handle.

Bud had to cool off during the recent heat wave of 68 degrees.

We Need Your Help Right Now

Please remember how important subscriptions are to the horses’ survival. We are having many problems with the government and even the Bahamas National Trust is refusing to assist them. We have got to be able to support them independently. Please email request for more information about the situation, and please use this site to help.

Nunki says "Please don't let us die out, help us have a Merry Christmas. We have to survive the people who don't care about us."

Sorry for No Recent Posts

Apologies!  Many, many things are going on behind the scenes just now in our  decades long effort to get the remaining Abaco Horses desperately needed support.  There are no mysteries about what has to be done but a relacitrant goernment with many agendas, which do not include the welfare of the horses, are hampering us.  We’ll keep you upated as best we can.

In the meantime, the mares continue to look better and better, tractor repairs have begun and we’re keeping up the struggle to move forward.

As always financial support is paramount as the government is stalling on fulfilling its promise to provide funding upon completion of our incorporation as a local charity, which effort was delayed for seven years

It looks as though Mare Alnitak has added a white stripe to her thick growing winter coat.

Flyover Search for Stallions

Thursday, October 21 . . . A flyover of the area to the south of the Wild Horse Preserve was provided by a good friend and supporter of WHOA. Unfortunately neither Hadar nor Capella was seen, but this is not cause for concern. Yet. When the tractor was working and we could get to the back field, Hadar was not seen on several trips. Capella has only been seen by two people in the last four years. Palms grow up under a covering layer of pine tops. Any horse under the palms will be invisible. Even Capella, with his bright white spots, could hide easily anywhere in the thousand or so acres of the area.

We are hoping that our tractor will be repaired soon and that we’ll be able to get fuel to do more searches.  Please remember, we’re trying to build our subscription base.  Small monthly payments add up to big help for us.  We have had very few visitors during the economic downturn. Visitors are our major source of income. The continuing refusal of the government to provide clean pastures for the horses means that we have the added expense of buying and freighting in their grain supplement and we continue to be hard pressed to pay the weekly wages of the two workmen who look after the horses.

Independence

I go where I wish to go. Yes,  I have my hoof in a bucket.
If the bucket is in my way, I walk on it. I go where I wish to go.

Waiting for Help

Mare Nunki says, “You mean I really can’t push Acamar away from her bucket of grain?”

We are still waiting for the government to make good on its July promise to our vet to put in clean, sage free pastures for the horses. So far not one move in that direction has been made. They also have not even begun to move toward setting up a very simple treatment area for her to use.

A Lazy Sunday Afternoon

A bucket of feed, a long, cool drink and a nap in the shade. What  a perfect way to spend the day.  The three Abaco Wild Horse Mares (Nunki at back, Acamar in the middle and her daughter Alnitak in front) enjoy a change in the weather as the heat of summer gives way to cooler, drier days.

No Problems From Storms

The Preserve marshes and waterholes are brimful, everything is sparkling now that the sun has returned. A week of above average rainfall  encouraged major growth so the mares were let into the dogs’ large pen again this morning to trim the grass and amaranth. There’s a strong closure between the dogs’ two pens, and they didn’t even know the horses were there. The dogs tend to stay in the front ‘parlor’ pen in order to not miss any activity that might be going on at the base.

No Damage From Storm

The Horses, Dogs and Cats are fine after the passage of the low pressure area to our west on Wednesday, Sept. 29.  There are huge puddles everywhere, even more than after some bigger storms we’ve had in the past.  Here’s Ursi, a little tired after all the thunder.

And here’s Nunki, enjoying her grain with raindrops still on her face. What beautiful curves in photo 2.

There are three new videos, one  showing a basic trot, see gaits, another showing the three mares trying to decide to visit the base, and the third showing Nunki having a good rub on a Neem tree.

Please remember how terribly close we are to losing them.

Welcome!

Welcome to our new site!  At the moment we are watching the tropical storm winds and rain headed just to the west of us, we’ve already had a few squalls.  The mares have had their daily grain and by tomorrow the water holes should be overflowing. The dogs and cats have their shipping containers to hide in.
